The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development for Southern Africa (USAID) and the CGIAR, Water, Land and Ecosystems Research Program (WLE), and implemented by the  International Water Management Institute (IWMI), International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC), and  XRI Blue . The project is coordinated by to Karen G. Villholth Sub-Theme Leader (Groundwater and Underground Solutions), IWMI.

Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) Program:

Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE)  is a global research-for-development program working through partnerships to provide sustainable solutions for people and societies. WLE works to ensure that agricultural intensification benefits smallholder farmers’ livelihoods, is sustainable and makes use of the services provided by ecosystems. WLE aims to tackle key global challenges related to water scarcity, climate variability and environmental degradation and work from farm to landscape scale. WLE partners with 11 CGIAR research centres and FAO.


International Water Management Institute:

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit, scientific research organization focusing on the sustainable use of water and land resources in developing countries. It is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with regional offices across Asia and Africa. IWMI works in partnership with governments, civil society and private sector to develop scalable agricultural water management solutions that have real impact on poverty reduction, food security and ecosystem health.


International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC):

IGRAC is part of the UNESCO family and works closely with UNESCO-IHP Secretariat on implementation of the International Hydrological Programme. Additionally, IGRAC contributes to the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) and has an increasing number of common activities with UNESCO-IHE and other UNESCO Water Centres. IGRAC has a strong link with World Meteorological Organization (WMO)  through the WMO-led and supported network of global observations.
